History

AICS was formed by a group of couples in Edmonton. It originated from a casualdiscussion in September 2011. The discussion originated from the cost of fund raising and a huge portion of donation is traditionally spent on fund raising. In reality, the donors contribute their fund with an expectation that the entire amount will be used for the purpose. However, in most cases, from 30 to 60% of contribution becomes fund raising expenses. I donate a dollar to a poor and needy, I expect that dollar to be used by the needy individual, not by others. This was the idea.

Seven couples, Mahbub and Shoma Choudhury, Mokbul and Soheli Hossain, Jehangir and Shakila Khan, Ashraf and Farzana Khadem, Mahfuzur and Sharmin Rahman, and Shahidul and Shahin Islam,  decided to form a small charity organization with a commitment to conduct charity with no overhead cost. In practice, there is always overhead costs – money transfer cost, bank account maintenance cost, fund raising cost, etc. These costs are supposed to be negligent. The couples decided to volunteer their time (no salary expenses to anyone) and the negligible costs of money transfer, bank account maintenance and small fund raising events should be contributed by members.

The seven couple met several times toward the end of 2011 and drafted a set of by-laws and objectives to form a charitable society. Accordingly, the AICS was registered on March 19, 2012.

Why another charity organization

AICS is a purely charitable organization formed by six couples in Edmonton in 2011. In a holiday season gathering, these six couples discussed about the charities they do and the actual amount the real recipients received. Most of the conventional charities have high overhead cost – fundraising, administration, maintenance. The actual recipients receive only a portion of the donation amount. The group decided to form a charity with guarantee that every penny donors contribute must go to the actual recipients. Hence the birth of the AICS.

How is AICS different from other charities?

AICS is different from other common charity organization in the following aspects.

  1. AICS commits to all donors that the entire donated amount must go to the actual recipients. AICS does not take any overhead cost. All the maintenance costs – fundraising, money transfer, government fees, etc. are all paid through a separate fund contributed by the Board members.
  2. All Board members and regular donors / contributors of the AICS. An individual with no contribution cannot be a Board member.
  3. AICS extends financial help only to the poorest of the poor who are in desperate need and have little or no other option of getting support.
  4. All projects are directly monitored by designated Board members to ensure that the donated amount is appropriately used.
  5. Within the capability of the organization, it supports anyone who are in desperate need of help, home and abroad. Most members of AICS are the first-generation Canadians, and they understand what challenges a newcomer to Canada go through. Within means, AICS tries to help newcomers and others to help in integrating in the society.
  6. AICS or any of its members do not seek any worldly benefits – financial or otherwise. The only benefit they are expected to get are their mental satisfaction of doing charitable act and the reward from the Almighty Allah.
